When you are making wood for the fire, there is nothing more valuable than a log splitter. This is a hydraulic machine that can do very quickly and easily what you used to have to do with an axe. It uses modern technology to accomplish the same job in less time and with less danger of injury. For this reason, it is especially a good machine for someone who has never split wood before. Using an axe can be dangerous if you have no experience; log splitters can also be dangerous if they are used incorrectly, but, if you know what you are doing, they can drastically reduce the chances of an accident.

The first thing that you need to do is to figure out what kind of a splitter you have. Does it run on petrol and oil? Does it run on electricity? If it is electric, you just have to plug it in. If it runs on petrol, though, you need to fill it up before you can get started. You also need to check the oil levels. Some slitters require you to mix the petrol and the oil together, while oilers have direct injection systems where the oil needs to be put into a separate compartment and it is then added to the petrol by the machine.

Next, you need to make sure that all of the logs are ready to go. Typically, log splitters have a splitting area of only a meter or so. You want to cut the logs into smaller pieces with a chainsaw. You cannot put them on the splitter if they are too long; you also want to remember that longer logs will shift more when they are being split. They will be pushed to the side in accordance with the grain of the wood. They may also be too long to fit in your fireplace. You are best off to cut them into pieces that are about half a meter long.

With that done, you just need to set the wood in place. Put it up against the cutting head and hold it in place with your hand. Keep your hand on the back portion of the log, but also on the top. This way, it will not be hit by the press or the cutting head. When you have it in the correct position, you just need to push a button or pull a lever - depending on the model of log splitter that you have - and the machine will begin to work. The hydraulic press will press forward against the back of the log and push it against the cutting head, splitting the log in two.

It is important that you remove your hand when the cutting begins. The log will hold itself. You may have to split some logs multiple times, turning them each time, in order to get them to be small enough to be used as firewood. The press moves slowly, but the job will be efficient and easy.
